Rain on Your Wedding Day: Destination Wedding Tips

Rain on your wedding day may not be what you envisioned, but it does not automatically mean your wedding is ruined! You can plan the perfect day, choose the perfect time of year, and even pick the driest month, and it can still rain. That’s exactly what happened to me! From personal experience, I have a few tips to help you prepare for the possibility of rain and make sure it doesn’t put a damper on your destination wedding.

Destination Wedding Tip #1: Know Your Resort’s Rain Backup Plan

The most important thing you can do is be prepared. When you are planning a destination wedding, ask your resort what their rain backup plan looks like before you sign your contract. Know exactly where your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception will move if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Most importantly, make sure you are happy with that backup plan.

Most of the time, the backup plan will be a ballroom or covered space. Usually, resorts do not have as many backup options, so be reasonable when looking at backup spaces. Remember that these spaces can still transform into something beautiful.

You can also get creative with umbrellas for the ceremony. For my personal wedding, I asked if there was a break in the forecast around my wedding time. There was! By moving our ceremony 30 minutes later, we were able to keep our original venue space.

Destination Wedding Tip #2: Trust Your Resort Coordinator

Your resort coordinator will monitor the weather throughout the morning. If it looks like rain is likely, they will present you with your options and work with you to determine the best course of action.

You can choose to stick with your original plan and hope the weather holds out, but understand that there can be risks involved. If rain moves in during your reception, the resort may need to end the event. Resorts generally will not risk allowing an outdoor event to continue if conditions could damage equipment or create a safety issue.

Destination Wedding Tip #3: Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control the weather, but you can control how prepared you are for it. Go into your wedding day knowing exactly what Plan B looks like, and trust your resort coordinator to monitor the conditions.

The resort has, without a doubt, dealt with bad weather before. Know that your resort will go above and beyond to make your wedding day phenomenal and your venues beautiful. A little rain does not have to take away from your special day!
